Liverpool look to Belgium ace to fill potential void

Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina

Liverpool want to sign Sunderland goalkeeper Simon Mignolet, after Pepe Reina refused to commit to the Reds.

The Daily Mail are reporting that Liverpool will bring the Belgian to Anfield, as rumours linking Reina with Barcelona continue to grow. And the Spaniard didn’t rule out a move to the Catalan club:

“I have a contract at Liverpool and I feel valued there. They only reason I would plan to move elsewhere is if there was interest in me from Barcelona.” Reina said.

Mignolet would only cost £7million, which is £5million cheaper than Stoke’s valuation of their goalkeeper Asmir Begovic.

Barcelona have been linked with a move for Reina as they look to sell Victor Valdes to Monaco. But the Spaniard wants to stay with the La Liga champions for the final year of his contract, before leaving as a free agent next summer.

Reina came through the Barcelona academy, and played for the senior squad between 200 and 2002. The Spaniard played against Liverpool in the UEFA Cup in 2001, but couldn’t keep a clean sheet at Anfield, conceding to Gary McAllister’s penalty in a 1-0 aggregate victory for the Merseyside club.

Liverpool signed Reina from Villareal to replace Jerzy Dudek in the summer of 2005, despite the Polish goalkeeper’s heroics in the Champions League final.

Do you think Mignolet should move to Liverpool? Should Reina join Barcelona? Have your say below.
