As reported by ESPN in Brazil, Liverpool have set their eyes on young Brazilian starlet Thiago Maia, who is currently playing for Santos in his native country.
Liverpool already have a trio of Brazilians at Anfield; Philippe Coutinho, Roberto Firmino and Lucas Leiva. There’s room for one more though and there’s a chance he could arrive in January.
ESPN say that Klopp is interested in signing 19 year old defensive midfielder Thiago Maia, who is tipped to be a future Brazil international.
They reckon big money bids have already been turned down by Santos from Zenit and Napoli so it’s possible it will take a massive fee to bring him to Liverpool.
That shouldn’t dissuade the Reds though given they likely have a significant budget to spend on players next month.
Thiago Maia was part of the Brazilian side that achieved Olympic glory in Rio and is tipped to go on and become an international star for years to come, having amassed 22 caps at youth level.
The young midfielder is one of the top prospects coming through Santos’ famed youth set-up. He’s made 35 appearances for his club this season, establishing himself firmly into the first team.
Known for tough tackling and ability to carry the ball forward at his feet with strength and pace, he’d likely fit well into Liverpool’s current free-flowing system.
If the Reds can be the European club that attracts him to the continent, it could prove to be something of a coup given the best talent coming out of Brazil tends to find its way to Spain and Portugal.
Perhaps Liverpool’s current Brazilian contingent could play a big role in making Merseyside his preferred option.
