Liverpool are set to keep Simon Mignolet at the club, manager Jurgen Klopp has told the club’s official website.

What’s the word?

The goalkeeper made just two appearances in 2018/19, playing in the FA Cup defeat to Wolves and the Carabao Cup loss to Chelsea.

Alisson Becker has made the No.1 shirt his own at Anfield but Klopp is insistent that the Belgium international will remain in place for next season, with Liverpool needing more than just one option in goal.

He said: “I’ve had a lot of conversations with him in the last couple of years and months. Before we left we had a talk and I would say yes [he will stay].”

He added: "I think it’s because at a club like Liverpool you need two No.1s at least and we have that, that’s cool, with Ali and Simon.

“That’s a very good situation for the club but a situation I think you should have and that’s why everything is fine from my point of view.”

Not good enough

Mignolet is clearly a fine professional because he has barely rocked the boat at Liverpool since Alisson came in and made the goalkeeper position his own.

But the fact of the matter is this: He’s not good enough to be anywhere near the No.1 shirt.

It says a lot that the Reds lost both of the games in which he played in 2018/19 and, in total, he has conceded 239 goals in 204 games for the Reds.

Compare that to Alisson, who has conceded 31 in 54, and who also let in just 66 goals in 64 outings for Roma, and one sees that Mignolet is nowhere near the required level at Anfield.

He is likely to spend the entirety of this season on the bench, then, but Liverpool will be in serious trouble if Alisson picks up an injury.

They should let the Belgian go and replace him with a goalkeeper who can actually keep goal.
