Liverpool make Champions League winner priority target amid doubts about first-team star

Liverpool are keen on Marc-Andre ter Stegen and have made the Barcelona goalkeeper a priority target heading into the summer amid fears about Simon Mignolet’s performances, according to reports from Fichajes.

The Reds’ Belgian stopper was once again in the headlines for all the wrong reasons on Sunday after letting a tame Fernandinho shot squirm past him as the Merseysiders lost the League Cup Final to Manchester City.

Although Mignolet went on to make a number of top saves to keep his side in the game and help them reach penalty-kicks, the ex-Sunderland’s man’s performances have been a cause of concern all season, and it’s understood that the club are considering replacing him with a new No.1 ahead of 2016/17.

And reports claim that the man they want is Ter Stegen, who is currently Barca’s ‘cup goalie’, with a £15m offer being readied.

The Germany international signed for the Catalans from Borussia Monchengladbach in 2014, but the vast majority of his outings for the club have come in European and domestic cup competition, with Claudio Bravo the main man at the Nou Camp.

Granted, this has allowed him to lift the Champions League trophy last season, but the player himself is likely to have reservations about wasting some of the best years of his career on the bench.

The 23-year-old would be a perfect replacement for Mignolet, whose errors have been costly for Liverpool in a number of games this season.
