Liverpool make contact with 18-goal Chelsea strike target

Liverpool have contacted QPR’s goalscoring star Charlie Austin’s representatives ahead of a potential summer move, according to reports from the Northern Echo.

The English forward – who was recently called up to the Three Lions squad, but is yet to feature – netted an astonishing 18 goals for the Super Hoops last season, however his efforts were not enough to keep the Londoners in the Premier League.

A move to stay in the top tier appears to be the likely outcome this summer, with teams such as Chelsea believed to be looking at the hit-man – who finished behind only Sergio Aguero, Harry Kane and Diego Costa in the Golden Boot race last season.

And now reports claim that Liverpool are also in the battle, with senior officials from Merseyside having made contact with Austin’s representatives.

Goals were a major issue for the Anfield outfit last term, with a tally of just 52 – 49 short of their 2013/14 haul of 101 – having been a major factor in missing out on Champions League qualification.

A deal for Danny Ings to arrive when his Burnley contract expires has already been settled, but with Daniel Sturridge’s injury record more options may be on Brendan Rodgers’ mind.
