Liverpool may lose out on major Klopp target (not Teixeira) after latest development

Liverpool may lose out on summer target Joel Matip, with Schalke having offered the centre-back a ‘double your money’ contract extension, according to reports from Sport1, citing Recklinghaeuser Zeitung.

The Reds are believed to be in for the Cameroon international, with a Bosman move once his deal with the Gelsenkirchen outfit expires at the end of the season mooted.

However, Schalke are desperate to keep hold of the athletic star, and reports claim they have offered him a new contract that will double his salary.

The news will come as a big blow for the Merseyside club, who have already all but accepted defeat in their pursuit of Shakhtar Donetsk’s Alex Teixeira.

Matip is a player Jurgen Klopp knows well from his time in the Bundesliga, and has been mooted as a potential replacement for Kolo Toure, who looks set to leave Anfield on a free transfer in around six months’ time.
