Liverpool on red alert for Barca star

Barcelona defender Martin MontoyaLiverpool could make a move for Barcelona’s Martin Montoya if his contract situation remains unclear after imminent talks with the club.

The 22-year-old is set to discuss his future at the Nou Camp with members of the La Liga giants’ hierarchy, with his current deal set to expire at the end of next season.

Montoya is desperate to become a first-team regular, but his playing time has been limited since his breakthrough into the first-team.

Daniel Alves is currently seen as Barca’s first choice right-back, which has seen his understudy make just 25 outings since his debut in 2011 – a low figure given the club’s participation in European and domestic competitions.

His agent, Jose Maria Orobitg, has revealed that discussions are set to take place, but hinted that his client may opt against penning a new deal due to his current role.

“For the moment he is under contract with FC Barcelona until the end of the season,” he told the Daily Star.

“We have talked but there is no certainty that Martin Montoya would hold down a first-team spot, because right now Daniel Alves closes the door.”

Liverpool are believed to lead the race should Montoya look to move, but Arsenal are also keen.
