Liverpool outcast confirms Anfield return

Pepe Reina has revealed that he will be returning to Liverpool after the World Cup, but hinted that his long-term plans are unclear.

The Spanish goalkeeper spent last season on loan at Napoli, and widely expected to make the deal a permanent one ahead of the 2014/15 campaign.

But with the Italians and the Reds having failed to agree on a fee – The Naples-based outfit were far from keen to match his £5m price tag – Reina’s future has once again been plunged into doubt.

Although he was axed by Brendan Rodgers last year and shipped out on loan, Reina says that he will be heading back to Anfield in the coming weeks:

“For now I will return to Liverpool.” He is quoted by the Daily Star.

“That is the only certainty I have.

“I have a two-year contract with Liverpool, so I have no other news to tell you.”

Reina was thought to be destined for a return to former club Barcelona this summer, but as their interest cooled Napoli – where he has been working under former boss Rafa Benitez – moved into pole position.

Arsenal have also been linked with the stopper, as have Atletico Madrid.
