Liverpool could make a surprise move for Marseille playmaker Mathieu Valbuena this month, according to the Daily Mirror.

Brendan Rodgers has made no secret of his desire to bring in new additions this month, and the 29-year-old has now been mentioned as a possible target.

Valbeuna has been tipped for a move away from the Stade Velodrome, either during the January transfer window or in the summer.

Ligue 1 rivals Monaco had been mentioned as his most likely destination, but now it appears Liverpool have entered the race.

Rodgers is keen to add players who can ‘hit the ground running’ this month, with the Reds set to battle for a top four place during the second half of the season.

Liverpool currently occupy fourth place in the Premier League, but remain just a single point clear of Merseyside rivals Everton.

Rodgers knows he needs to add strength in depth to a squad that has been plagued by injury problems, with Daniel Sturridge, Steven Gerrard, Joe Jose Enrique, Joe Allen, Mamadou Sakho and Daniel Agger all struggling for fitness of late.

The Reds have been heavily linked with a move for FC Basel winger Mohamed Salah, but the Mirror also reports that Inter Milan have now entered the race for the Egyptian winger.
