The 16-year-old, who holds Dutch and Serbian nationality, has been dubbed as the new Arjen Robben.
Serbian press have suggested that the Reds are at the front of the queue to sign the wonderkid, who has scored twice in three games for Groningen this season. Liverpool scouts have been spotted on more than one occasion watch Zikovic, who only made his debut for the Eredivisie side last December.
Groningen president Hans Nijland confirmed the suggestions, saying: “All the big clubs in the Netherlands are interested in him but Liverpool scouts are particularly active. They are constantly watching us.”
Liverpool have done the majority of their summer signings early on in the transfer window, securing major players such as Simon Mignolet and Kolo Toure before their pre-season tour. And after recently securing Aly Cissokho on a season-long loan deal, Brendan Rodgers looks ready to plan for Liverpool’s long term future as well as the upcoming season.
Despite being eligible to play for Holland, Zivkovic has opted to represent his mother’s home country of Serbia.
The Reds travel to Aston Villa on Saturday, and Rodgers could give Cissokho his debut for the Reds.
Is Rodgers right to look at youngsters now? Or is there still work to be done?
