Liverpool plotting new move for Bundesliga star

Kyriakos PapadopoulosLiverpool are ready to make a last ditch move to sign Schalke defender Kyriakos Papadopoulos, according to reports from the Daily Star.

Reds chief Brendan Rodgers is believed to be desperate to lure a new centre-back to Anfield before the transfer window closes next week, with a series of injuries having limited his options.

The Northern Irishman will take his side into their weekend clash with Manchester United with Sebastian Coates, Martin Skrtel and Kolo Toure all injured.

Liverpool have been tracking Papadopoulos for much of the summer, but have held back from making a serious move due to concerns about his fitness.

But, Rodgers is now willing to take a risk and make a move for the 21-year-old.

It is believed that Schalke are holding out for £13m, but the Merseysiders are hopeful that a season-long loan with a view to a £12m deal next summer will be enough to push through a transfer.

The Greek international managed just 10 appearances last term for the Bundesliga club due to having an operation to solve a troublesome knee injury.

He is back in full training, but doubts remain surrounding his long-term fitness.

Liverpool are also keen on Ajax’s Toby Alderweireld and Tiago Ilori of Sporting Lisbon.
