Liverpool plotting sensational move for legendary midfielder

Liverpool could be set to launch a sensational bid to bring former midfielder Xabi Alonso back to the club, according to the Metro.

The Spanish midfielder has not renewed his contract with Bayern Munich, and is free to talk to foreign clubs in January as he enters the final six months of his deal.

The 33-year old enjoyed a successful spell on Merseyside between 2004 and 2009, winning the FA Cup and the Champions League.

He scored in the infamous 2005 Champions League final, as the Reds battled from 3-0 down at half-time to win the trophy on penalties.

The former Real Sociedad man then joined Real Madrid in 2009, winning a La Liga title and the Champions League again.

A hugely successful footballer, he also won the World Cup and two European Championships at international level with Spain.

Now, reports suggest that manager Jurgen Klopp could be about to offer him a return to Anfield at the expiration of his contract in Bavaria.

Though he is likely to have offers from a multitude of clubs in Qatar and the MLS, Liverpool will hope the emotional pull of a return will prove too hard to resist.
