Liverpool ready to let star man’s contract run down

The Independent are reporting that Liverpool are willing to let star forward Raheem Sterling’s contract to expire rather than cash in on him during the summer transfer window.

The Reds look set to miss out on the Champions League next season after a torrid run of form which has seen them drift seven points behind Manchester United, who occupy fourth place.

It had been thought that 20 year-old Sterling would use this as an excuse to demand a move – with Liverpool’s Premier League rivals Arsenal or Manchester City both reportedly interested in signing the player.

The England international has already turned down the Anfield club’s offer of a £100,000-a-week deal, with his agent convinced he could barter for yet more money at another club.

However, so determined are Liverpool to keep Sterling for next season that they are now prepared to hold onto him and let his contract run down – which could see the youngster walk away from the club for nothing when it expires.
