Brendan Rodgers has confirmed that he expects Raheem Sterling to sign a new Liverpool deal “imminently”.
The Reds starlet’s current deal is set to expire at the end of next season, and with his blistering performances in 2014 there have been suggestions that some of the biggest clubs on the planet are chasing the 20-year-old.
Real Madrid have been credited with an interest in the versatile attacker, but Liverpool have been busily negotiating fresh terms with the Jamaican-born England international in recent weeks.
And Rodgers has moved to quash fears among Anfield supporters that Sterling will be heading away from Merseyside, with an agreement very close:
“The club are speaking to Sterling’s representatives,” he is quoted by Goal.
“I would think that would be completed very imminently. The player is very happy.”
With Daniel Sturridge out injured and the club’s crop of centre-forwards having failed to impress, the winger has been deployed as the focal point of the Reds’ attack.
His pace and speed of thought in the position have been key for the in-form side of late, with his Capital One Cup semi-final goal potentially a key one in the tie.
