As reported in an exclusive by The Daily Express, Liverpool could be facing a fight to hold on to one of their top stars with Paris Saint-Germain showing significant interest in Philippe Coutinho.
Coutinho is currently missing from Liverpool line-ups due to a long-term ankle ligament injury but that hasn’t stopped speculation surrounding his future at Anfield.
The Express reckon that Paris Saint-Germain are preparing a massive £40m bid for the Brazilian in January.
The paper says that PSG had a £22m offer for Coutinho knocked back in the summer but are willing to come back in with a much bigger bid to secure his services. With giants Barcelona and Bayern Munich also interested, Liverpool could a have tough time convincing Coutinho to stay.
Coutinho is said to be aware of the interest and has even told Neymar he’s open to a Barcelona move, according to The Express.
Coutinho has spent almost four years at Anfield and his season so far is one of his best for the Reds. The Brazilian international scored 10 goals and contributed 5 more assists before picking up his injury in a 2-0 home win vs. Sunderland in November.
That’s a lot of goals that would need replaced and we’re not sure £40m can buy that sort of contribution in today’s English Premier League market.
Like the Luis Suarez scenario though, it could be ultimately out of their control whether or not he goes. All Liverpool can demand is a fair fee for the contribution so far, which anyone would agree has been significant.
