Liverpool set to increase offer for Real Madrid midfielder

Liverpool are prepared to up their offer for out-of-favour Real Madrid midfield enforcer Asier Illarramendi to £13.8 million as the Reds look to continue their summer spree, according to Metro.

The Anfield outfit are understood to have bid £10 million for the 25-year-old last month, but Los Blancos turned down the offer at the time, with new Real manager Rafael Benitez keen to take a look at him in pre-season.

Benitez – who himself managed Liverpool between 2004 and 2010 – has now decided that Illarramendi is unlikely make a big impact for Real next season, which has prompted the Reds to increase their offer to £13.8 million to push the deal through.

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers is apparently determined for the transfer to happen having unsuccessfully attmepted to sign the player during the January transfer window.

Illarramendi moved to the Bernabeu from Real Sociedad for 32 million euros in 2013 but has struggled to break into the first team.
