Given saw a move to Doncaster Rovers fall through earlier this summer and has been told by Villa manager Paul Lambert that there is no future for him at Villa Park.
But Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers sees Irish goalkeeper as an ideal No2 to back-up Simon Mignolet, who joined the Anfield club from Sunderland this summer, and a deal could be completed before the end of the weekend.
If the deal is completed, Liverpool will be Given’s seventh club in England after spells with Blackburn Rovers, Swindon, Sunderland, Newcastle, Manchester City and Aston Villa.
Meanwhile, Rodgers is expected to be busy during the final four days of the transfer window after Liverpool’s 4-2 Capital One Cup victory over Notts County in mid-week saw new signings Aly Cissokho and Kolo Toure both limp off with injuries.
Long-term target Tiago Ilori of Sporting Lisbon is still a possible arrival, with the clubs reopening talks on a potential £7million deal, while Paris St. Germain’s French centre-back Mamadou Sakho has been lined up by Rodgers as a back-up option if a deal for Ilori cannot been agreed.
However, Liverpool will face competition from Serie A side Roma if they decide to move for Sakho.
