Liverpool should forget about signing Christian Pulisic after latest Dortmund display

Borussia Dortmund finished top of their Champions League group with a 2-0 win away against Monaco on Tuesday night, but winger Christian Pulisic certainly didn’t produce a display that would have impressed any potential suitors.

Liverpool and Chelsea have both been linked with a move for the exciting 20-year-old attacker this season, and The Liverpool Echo report that Reds boss Jurgen Klopp is a long-term admirer of the United States international having failed with a bid to bring him to Anfield in 2016.

It would be no surprise if the German manager wanted more depth and competition in wide areas despite having Mo Salah and Sadio Mane at his disposal, but the shortcomings of the latter were on display against Napoli on Tuesday when he missed several clear-cut opportunities, and the Senegal international is now without a goal in his previous eight appearances.

It appears as though the Pulisic is now getting closer to securing a move to England as he becomes more and more consistent, although that was a trait that certainly wasn’t on display at the Stade Louis II stadium in midweek.

While Raphael Guerreiro shone on the left flank with two goals, a passing accuracy of more than 95% and having had 101 touches, as per WhoScored, the same can’t be said of his American teammate.

Borussia Dortmund winger Christian Pulisic's stats vs Monaco

The forward failed to have a single shot or make a key pass with his 69 touches throughout his 90 minutes on the pitch, and he generally failed to impress on the ball.

He was dispossessed on two occasions and none of the three crosses he produced were accurate, suggesting that he isn’t at a point when he can produce at the highest level and shine in a Liverpool starting XI consistently ahead of someone like Mane.

Injury issues have restricted Pulisic so far this term, but he needs to show a big improvement if he is to secure a move to Merseyside in the future on current form.
