Liverpool suffered a huge transfer blow on Saturday when their bid to sign Lyon attacking midfielder Nabil Fekir went from being agreed and almost completed to falling through, and Reds boss Jurgen Klopp should now look to take advantage of Chelsea star Ruben Loftus-Cheek's uncertainty about his future.

What's the word, then?

Well, the Reds, whose fans now want to sign a 25-year-old attacking midfielder with one saying he is "better than Fekir and £25m", had looked set to seal an initial £48.4m deal to bring the 24-year-old to Anfield, but after they changed the goalposts the Ligue 1 outfit announced that negotiations had ended and that the France international would be staying.

Meanwhile, according to reports in The Sun on Sunday, Loftus-Cheek says he isn't going to decide his future with the west London club until after the World Cup having returned from a successful season-long loan spell with Crystal Palace.

The 22-year-old struggled to get minutes on the pitch during the 2016/17 campaign under Antonio Conte, and he likely will look to go unless he is promised regular starts having got a taste for it at Selhurst Park.

How did Loftus-Cheek do last season?

He was brilliant.

The 22-year-old is a real classy player and he has the skill, dribbling ability and athleticism to be a great attacking midfielder in the future.

The 6ft 3in star played through the centre and on either flank for the Eagles last term, scoring two goals and providing a further four assists in 24 Premier League appearances.

Why should Liverpool sign him?

While the England international isn't quite at the level of Fekir yet, he clearly has something about him and the way he links up so well with the players around him – like Wilfried Zaha at Palace and Marcus Rashford for England last week – make you wonder just how good he could be alongside Naby Keita, Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane and Mo Salah.

The 22-year-old certainly looks to have a really bright future ahead of him, and perhaps he could reach his potential at Anfield and become a really key player in the Reds bid to win their first-ever Premier League title, as well as building on their Champions League final appearance.
