Liverpool should consider making a move for Sampdoria midfielder Lucas Torreira as a replacement for Emre Can.
Manager Jurgen Klopp is likely going to need a new defensive midfielder before the start of the season.
Can’s long-term future at Anfield looks bleak given that his contract expires in the next few months and he is yet to sign a new one.
With that in mind, the Reds should be looking at potential targets and they must glance an eye over to Sampdoria’s Torreira.
The Uruguayan international, who is valued at £22.5m by Transfermarkt, has been at the Italian club since 2016.
Last season, the midfielder featured in 38 games in all competitions, contributing with four goals and one assist.
In November last year, Football Italia reported that Torreira has a £21.9m release clause, which would make him a cheap buy in the current market.
He certainly has the potential to be! Not only is Torreira comfortable carrying out defensive duties, he has attacking strengths as well.
The Uruguayan has occasionally in the past been used more centrally and as an attacking midfielder, and that kind of versatility will surely be welcomed by Klopp.
Can has not always been a regular in the first XI at Anfield, and while he has impressive qualities, the 24-year-old struggled with consistency at times.
One of Torreira’s main attributes is his ability to intercept the ball, which is crucial when launching counter-attacks, something that Klopp likes to encourage.
