Last week, Mundo Deportivo reported that Liverpool are interested in signing Real Sociedad defender Diego Llorente, but they should be looking at Ajax youngster Matthijs de Ligt instead.

What's the word?

For so long, the defence was a problem area for Liverpool, but at the moment it seems to be their biggest strength.

Following Virgil van Dijk's arrival in January, Jurgen Klopp's back line has improved significantly.

This season, Joe Gomez has proven that he is a worthy centre-back partner for Van Dijk, which indicates that the club are not in desperate need of a defender.

However, there have been rumours regarding a shift in personnel at the back due to Joel Matip dropping down the pecking order, and a recent report from Mundo Deportivo suggested that Llorente is on the Reds' radar.

However, if defenders are on Liverpool's agenda, then they should take a look at Ajax star De Ligt.

Why him?

The Dutchman has been linked to Premier League clubs numerous times in the last few transfer windows.

De Ligt is only 19 years of age, but he is already showing a commanding presence at the back.

This season so far, the centre-back has made 12 Eredivisie appearances and four in the Champions League.

As mentioned, Liverpool are well equipped in defence, but if they are in the market for a fresh talent, then De Ligt would be a smart investment.

Despite already showing his ability at an elite stage, the teenager still has plenty of room for growth, and he would become a mainstay in the Reds' team for years.
