Liverpool winger Stewart Downing is desperate for Luis Suarez to stay at the club, and believes if he does the Reds will have a genuine chance of breaking into next season’s top four, reports the Daily Mirror.
England midfielder Downing believes the strong finish to last season, coupled with the impressive signings made by Brendan Rodgers during this summer’s transfer window have left Liverpool perfectly poised for an impressive campaign – if they can hold onto their main man.
Suarez is attempting to engineer a move to Premier League rivals Arsenal, who are reportedly preparing a third bid of £42.5million for the Uruguayan.
Suarez played the final half hour of Liverpool’s last pre-season friendly, a 3-0 win over Thailand on Sunday. However it seems his future is still no closer to being resolved after a summer-long saga.
Downing hopes for everyone connected with Liverpool’s sake, the forward opts to stay at Anfield and help them push on next season.
“It’s so important for us to keep hold of him, as Luis is one hell of a player,” said Downing.
“He’s had some good discussions with the manager which will remain private.
“For us as players, nothing changes. He’s still the same player and he’s a great lad to have around the place.
“He gets on well with all the lads. Luis knows we all want him to stay.
“It’d be so disappointing to lose him.
“We want to keep our best players to help us get into the Champions League. That has to be our aim.
“We’ve strengthened the squad with new signings and I’m sure there will be a few more to come.
“If we can reproduce the form we showed in the second half of last season, we’ll have a good chance of breaking into that top four.”
