The controversial Uruguayan recently ended speculation surrounding his future at Anfield by penning a new contract, which makes him the Reds’ highest paid player, after a blistering start to the season.
Despite missing the opening six games of the campaign due to a ban for biting Chelsea’s Branislav Ivanovic last term, Suarez has found the back of the net on 19 occasions, making him the division’s top scorer by some distance.
He added the most recent two efforts to his tally in Saturday’s 3-1 win against Cardiff – a result which took Liverpool to the top of the league – and Lucas believes that his fellow South American is the best player in English football.
“What he is doing this season and what he has done in the past few seasons he deserved that, we can see he is really comfortably playing here,” Leiva told The Mirror.
“It (the contract) is a positive message because the owners and manager said they want to keep their best players and at the moment he is not only our best player but the best player in the league.
“Hopefully he will maintain this form for a long time for the club.”
Suarez was linked with both Arsenal and Real Madrid over the summer, and is believed to have aspirations of playing in the Champions League in the coming years.
