It is believed that Steven Gerrard may be able to be included in England‘s squad for their friendly in Sweden this Wednesday, though he is having a precautionary scan over a knee injury.
Gerrard, who will earn an 100th cap as an England player if he takes part in the Sweden game suffered the injury during Liverpool‘s 1-1 draw yesterday at Chelsea. In a statement, The Football Association said: “Steven Gerrard will have a precautionary scan this afternoon, having reported for England duty on Sunday evening following Liverpool’s 1-1 draw with Chelsea. Gerrard is expected to be fit to travel to Sweden where he is in line to win his 100th cap for his country.”
Brendan Rodgers played down his Liverpool captain’s injury yesterday saying: “I think Steven will be alright. He has just opened up his medial ligament a bit. We’ll find out the full extent later on.”
Many England players have had to pull out of Wednesday’s friendly. This includes Wayne Rooney, who has injured his ankle, while Theo Walcott, Kyle Walker, Jonjo Shelvey and Aaron Lennon are amongst the others who will miss the fixture.
Roy Hogson has spoken of how honoured he feels to have Gerrard in his team. He said: “Steven Gerrard is an outstanding player, a very mature and thinking man, and I’m delighted I’m going to be the manager of the team when he gets that 100th cap. I will regard that as an honour as well. I felt that way when Jari Litmanen got his 100th cap for Finland and I was manager that day.”
If Steven Gerrard takes part this Wednesday, he would become the sixth person to achieve 100 caps.
