No announcement has been made from Reina or the club regarding his future, but the Spaniard has seen his name linked with a move away from the club for some time, with both Arsenal and Barclona reportedly showing an interest.
The fact Brendan Rodgers has spent £9million on a new goalkeeper does not bode well for Reina, and although the Liverpool boss insists Mignolet has been brought in to provide competition for the Spaniard, Liverpool legend Jan Molby believes the Belgian is a direct replacement for Reina as number one.
“I’d be very surprised if both of them were there on September 1,” Molby said.
“In the first three or four years Pepe was here he was as good as the club’s ever had.
“He hasn’t quite been the same in the last couple of years but I think he’s a great keeper. Possibly the time has come for him to move on.”
Reina was signed by Rafael Benitez in the summer of 2005. He has been number one for the past eight seasons, winning an FA Cup winners medal, a League cup winners medal, and finishing as runner up in the Premier League and Champions League during that time.
