Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard believes that Luis Suarez should stay at Anfield for at least one more year before pursuing a move to Barcelona, Real Madrid or Bayern Munich.
The controversial Uruguayan was widely expected to leave the Reds this summer, after revealing that he was frustrated with life in England and with a lack of Champions League football on Merseyside.
However, he became a shock transfer target for Arsenal, who were keen to lure him away from their domestic rivals.
But, a botched £40m plus £1 offer strained the relationship between the two clubs, ending any hope of a stunning move.
Since then, Suarez has apologised to Liverpool for his actions, and is set to return to the first-team once his 10-match ban for biting Branislav Ivanovic has run its course.
Although Gerrard understands hits team-mate’s desire to progress his career, he feels that the front-man should give it one more season at the club:
“I didn’t ever think Luis would leave – well, not to another English club anyway.” He is quoted by The Mirror.
“I don’t want to disrespect Arsenal, because they are a fantastic club, but I don’t see joining them as being a step forward for Luis.
“There are only really two or three clubs he should leave this football club for if he is taking a step forward.
“If we don’t qualify for the ¬Champions League this ¬season he can go to Real Madrid, -Barcelona or Bayern Munich – and he can go with his head held high.
“The one thing I can assure you, it’s not about money with Luis Suarez.”
Does Luis Suarez owe Liverpool another season? And would signing for Arsenal not be progress?
