The Reds entered the final day of the transfer window with somewhat of a defensive crisis, but Brendan Rodgers swooped to strengthen his central defensive options considerably.
Both Tiago Ilori and Mamadou Sakho joined from Sporting Lisbon and Paris Saint-Germain respectively, to add to Daniel Agger, Martin Skrtel and Toure.
The burly Ivorian started both of the Reds’ opening two Premier League clashes, despite some suggesting that the veteran would be little more than a squad player at Anfield.
Even though he has been a key part of the Merseysiders’ 100% start to the league campaign, Toure now looks to have a real fight on his hands for a starting berth.
However, he believes that the added competition will be good for everybody at the club.
“It’s fantastic,” Toure told The Mirror. “The competition has increased and everybody has to work really hard every day.
“The competition will be really tough and we need to work extra hard. Nobody will be expecting to play, we’ll all have to fight, but I love the competition.
“That’s the only way we can make the team better.”
Toure went on to praise both Sakho and Ilori individually.
“We know all about Mamadou Sakho, he is a very good player,” he added.
“Tiago has also come in from Portugal and is a really good defender as well.”
Who will be Liverpool’s first choice defenders now? Does Kolo Toure have a shot at first-team football?
