The Italian star joined the Reds from AC Milan in a £16m deal over the summer, and was expected to fire the goals lost by the sale of Luis Suarez.
Although such figures were always a long-shot, Balotelli’s meagre return of two strikes – neither in the Premier League – have been frustrating, as has his perceived lack of effort on the pitch.
It’s now understood that a number of Anfield stars have grown so frustrated that the 24-year-old continues to be handed starting chances, and have even sent a senior player to talk to Rodgers about the situation.
Some players are annoyed by the extent to which their manager has backed Balotelli, who is set to miss out on this afternoon’ game at Crystal Palace.
And a club source revealed the extent of the ill feeling on Merseyside:
“There is a growing sense of frustration. It seems no matter how badly Mario plays, he’s in the team.
“It’s almost like the manager is trying to prove a point, playing him until he scores.”
