Liverpool step up attempts to sign Barcelona ace

Martin MontoyaLiverpool are ready to step up their efforts to sign Barcelona full back Martin Montoya, after it emerged Arsenal are also interested in the young full back, according to the Daily Star.

The Spain under-21 international is highly rated in his homeland and across Europe, but has been unable to break into the Barca first team so far this season.

Arsenal have emerged as the latest club to show an interest, as well as Bayer Leverkusen, Inter Milan, Napoli and Bayern Munich.

That means Liverpool – who have held a long standing interest in the player – must move quickly if they are to persuade the full back to complete the switch to Anfield.

The defender’s contract runs out at the end of this season, and he is unlikely to be offered a new deal by Barcelona coach Tata Martino.

The 22-year-old fits perfectly into Brendan Rodgers philosophy of buying young talent, and is capable of playing the style of passing football the Liverpool boss is trying to implement at Anfield.

Montoya is yet to make a decision on his future, but sources in Spain suggest he would be interested in a move to Anfield, which has been the stomping ground for Spanish players the likes of Xabi Alonso, Fernando Torres and Pepe Reina in recent times.

Should Liverpool move for Martin Montoya?
