Liverpool step up interest in Carragher replacement

Tiago Ilori

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers has pinpointed Sporting Lisbon defender Tiago Ilori as the long term successor to Jamie Carragher at Anfield, according to the Daily Mail.

Ilori has broken into the Sporting first team this season and is valued at just £1.2million by his employers, leaving Rodgers licking his lips ahead of a vital summer for the Reds.

The 20-year-old was born in England to an English father and so is eligible to play for the Three Lions despite featuring at numerous youth levels for Portugal including 15 games for the under-19s.

Ilori can play both centrally and wide in the back four and so is seen as the perfect replacement for Carragher who is hanging up his boots at the end of the Premier League season.

The long serving Liverpool legend has signed up as a pundit for Sky Sports next season that could see him renew rivalries with former Manchester United right back Gary Neville.
