The Belgium international, who has represented his country on a whopping 58 occasions, is best known to Premier League fans for his stint at Arsenal.
The 30-year-old made 150 appearances for the Gunners across all competitions, including 110 outings in the Premier League, and captained them from 2014 until his departure two years later.
The veteran centre-back signed for Barcelona in a £15million deal but has been limited to just 21 outings in two seasons due to a succession of injury problems.
Vermaelen now looks set to leave the Nou Camp, especially following the capture of prodigious France international Samuel Umtiti, and according to AS there are already two transfer offers on the table.
Liverpool are believed to have made an approach for the former Ajax star alongside a club from Italy – most likely Roma.
Vermaelen and the La Liga champions will spend the next week deciding his future, although staying on in Catalonia as Luis Enrique’s fifth-choice centre-half hasn’t been completely ruled out.
