England captain Steven Gerrard wants nothing more than to lead his team to the World Cup in Brazil. After all, when he first got his captaincy that was the target, and now as the team approach the final qualifying match, it is clear he wants it more than ever.

But what’s his main motivation? Euro 2008.

Unfortunately, Gerrard is no stranger to being part of a squad that, not only does not perform to the best of their ability, but consequently disappoints the fans. The moment that stands out for everyone is when Croatia knocked them out of Euro 2008 in a 3-2 defeat at home. This defeat not only ended Steve McClaren’s role as England manager, but still “haunts” Gerrard after all this time. This is a moment that both fans and players alike do not want repeating.

It’s still close though, and as much as Gerrard says "it was a fantastic performance against Montenegro" on Friday, there are fans that would argue that their performance would have been better if he had not been on the pitch. Yes, they may have a back-up with the play-offs but that is a situation everybody definitely wants to avoid.
