As the Nabil Fekir saga finally looks to be nearing its end, reports claim Liverpool are eying the Frenchman’s teammate – 20 year-old Houssem Aouar.

What's the story?

Liverpool fans were annoyed this week when a report from the Liverpool Echo claimed the Fekir chase is done and dusted, but every cloud has a silver lining.

According to RMC reporter Mohamed Bouhafsi, both Liverpool and Chelsea are chasing Aouar, who has five goals and four assists in his last 11 Lyon appearances.

RMC were one of the first publications in France to break the story when Fabinho signed for Liverpool out of nowhere this summer, and Aouar would tick all the boxes for Jurgen Klopp.

Better fit than Fekir?

Aouar is not the finished article like Fekir, but the versatile youngster is an absolute star in the making, and may even have a higher ceiling than the Lyon captain.

Handed the number eight shirt and a shiny new contract by Lyon this summer, it is clear to see what the French club thinks of their latest starlet to come off the production line.

The 20 year-old plays mostly as a central midfielder, but his ability to also play on the left side could make him the perfect fit for that advanced spot on the left of Klopp’s midfield three, a position that has yet to be filled since the departure of Philippe Coutinho.

What's he good at?

He is an excellent dribbler, composed in tight spaces and able to weave his way out of trouble before finding incisive forward passes. He has completed 86 per cent of his passes this season, as well as completing 1.5 dribbles and 1.4 key passes per game.

The youngster doesn’t mind getting stuck in on the defensive end either, averaging 1.6 tackles in all competitions, a number which rises to an impressive 2.3 if only counting Champions League games.

Aouar’s control, vision and work rate in midfield was a huge part of Lyon’s shock win at Manchester City earlier this season, and the youngster could work absolute wonders in Klopp’s high-tempo system.

The one downside to the move is having to deal with Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas again, but Aouar could be the perfect Liverpool midfielder.
