In his weekly column for Sky Sports, journalist Kaveh Solhekol has revealed that “Timo Werner’s future is in Jurgen Klopp’s hands”.
Now, Solhekol has provided a major update on the striker future, and suggested that it is up to Klopp to see whether he can convince his fellow German to move to the Premier League.
He said: “Timo Werner’s future is in Jurgen Klopp’s hands. Werner will become a Liverpool player this summer if Klopp decides to activate his £50m release clause and if he can convince Werner he will play regularly next season.
“He is almost certain to leave RB Leipzig in the summer because of his release clause and he favours a move to Liverpool as long as he gets to play. Werner accepts he would have serious competition on his hands at Anfield in the shape of Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah and to be fair to him he does not believe he is at their level yet. If Liverpool can give his representatives the assurances they need, then Werner playing for Liverpool next season becomes a real possibility.”
As will be the case for Liverpool and their summer business, convincing high-profile players to potentially accept that their starting place will not be guaranteed will be a major hurdle to overcome.
The Reds are enjoying a historic season, what with them still being unbeaten in the Premier League after 27 games. How can Klopp justify to Werner that he would be a first-team regular for the Merseyside club when they’ve already got the likes of Roberto Firmino, Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane?
If he manages to pull it off, then it would be one hell of a masterstroke from the Liverpool boss.
