Liverpool to move for unsettled Newcastle ace

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers is ready to sanction a £15.5m January move for Cheick Tiote in a bid to solve his side’s defensive problems, according to reports from The Metro.

The Reds have already shipped the join highest total of goals in the Premier League this season after a stuttering start to the campaign, despite investing heavily in the likes of Dejan Lovren, Alberto Moreno and Emre Can after suffering as a result of their slackness at the back last term.

A 50 against record seriously damaged the Merseysiders’ title aspirations during 2013/14, and was widely seen as the major reason they narrowly missed out on a first English title in 24 years.

And with the problems persisting, Rodgers is keen to invest in a top class holding midfielder to protect his backline.

Tiote is seen as an option by the Anfielders, who have been alerted by his desire to leave Newcastle.

The 28-year-old Ivorian revealed last week that he’s ready to move away from St James’ Park after just over four years in the North East in search of a new challenge.

Rodgers is thought to see him as an ideal alternative to ageing skipper Steven Gerrard, whose lack of mobility and pace has been criticised.

The Magpies want around £20m for their man, but Liverpool are keen to knock them down to closer to £15m given the player’s desire to move.

Arsenal and Tottenham are said to be keen, while there is rumoured interest from clubs in Russia.
