The Atletico Madrid striker was the subject of a £22million bid from the Reds late on in the summer transfer window. And while the 24-year-old eventually rejected the offer, he admitted he was close to moving to the Reds.
“I had options to leave Atletico Madrid,” said Costa.
“I was very close to leaving. Liverpool is a great team. But after so much fighting and overcoming so many difficulties to win my place at Atletico, I couldn’t go.”
It was a blow for Brendan Rodgers, who also missed out on Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Willian during the transfer window. But with reports suggesting the Northern Irishman could return with a fresh bid for Costa in January, the forward played down a move to Anfield.
“I will stay at Atletico. I think it is important for me to continue growing here and playing here for many years to come,” he added.
The Reds have just two senior strikers in Daniel Sturridge and Luis Suarez, after allowing Fabio Borini to join Sunderland on loan on deadline day. While Rodgers is expected to look for a new forward in the new year, Costa has ruled himself out of the running months before the next transfer window opens.
Would Costa have been a success at Anfield? Who should Rodgers sign in January?
