Arsenal hero Paul Merson believes that should Liverpool and his old team conduct a stunning player plus cash transfer involving Raheem Sterling and Theo Walcott, the Reds could be getting one of the best deals ever.
The two England internationals have been linked with moves between Anfield and the Emirates Stadium of late, with reports having claimed that the Gunners are eager to pay £20m plus their winger for the 20-year-old Merseyside ace.
Sterling’s Liverpool future is far from clear right now, with the attacking starlet having already rejected contract offers from the club.
The youngster blew the saga wide open during a recent BBC interview, claiming that he’s spurned a £100,000-per-week proposal and that interest from Arsenal is flattering.
Brendan Rodgers’ side are desperate to keep Sterling, but Merson feels that a swap involving Walcott and cash makes sense for the North West giants:
“If Theo Walcott goes to Liverpool, Raheem Sterling goes to Arsenal and Liverpool get some money, I think Liverpool have had the best deal ever.” He told Sky Sports.
“If he goes to Arsenal, will he play? I don’t think he’s an Arsenal player. I don’t think he gets his head up or moves the ball quick enough.”
