Loads of Liverpool fans want Joe Gomez to start instead of Joel Matip at centre-back against Arsenal at Anfield this weekend for one reason.
The former started the Community Shield and the Premier League opener against Norwich City, while the latter partnered Virgil van Dijk in the Super Cup and against Southampton last weekend, with Gomez playing at right-back against Chelsea before being an unused substitute at St Mary’s.
However, the former Charlton youngster certainly has more pace than Matip, and given the Reds could come up against the likes of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Alexandre Lacazette and Nicolas Pepe on Saturday, that is something that could come in handy against Unai Emery’s men.

That is the thought of many Liverpool supporters anyway, who would prefer to see the England international start over the Cameroonian as Jurgen Klopp’s team look to maintain their 100% start to the top flight campaign.
While one said “one of Gomez’s strengths is his ability to recover with his pace”, while another said “with our really high line against Auba, Laca and Pepe we kind of need Gomez’s pace”.
Here is just a selection of the Twitter reaction…
Gomez we’ll need his pace

Gomez, to counter their front line pace. Matip’s height not really needed here

Where I disagree with Adam is I believe Gomez should start ahead of Matip. Arsenal have pace and could cause trouble on the counter. One of Gomez’s strengths is his ability to recover with his pace and I feel would be more suited against a tricky Arsenal side.

I would. I’d pick Gomez to play too as he has the pace to deal with Arsenal attack

Gomez pace would be important imo
Arsenal have pace and we play a high line

Gomez for pace only. Matip is class just lacks pace.

Btw i think Matip is better than Gomez atm but with our really high line against Auba, Laca and Pepe we kind of need Gomez’s pace

Gomez should play this weekend imo we need the pace when up against players like aubameyang and potentially pepe and plus Matip hasn’t looked great in his last two games either
