Liverpool watching Croatian playmaker

Liverpool are keen to secure a £12m January deal for Sevilla midfielder Ivan Rakitic, according to reports from Estadio Deportivo.

The Reds have been linked with the Croatian international in the past – namely during the summer transfer window – but Rodgers is believed to now be keen to firm up his interest in the playmaker.

Rakitic was one of only a few big name players to stay at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan over the summer, with top stars such as Alvaro Negredo, Jesus Navas and Geoffrey Kondogbia all fleeing after the club’s failure to secure European qualification for this season.

The 25-year-old has become, arguably, Sevilla’s most influential player this term, netting seven league goals and laying on five more for his team-mates.

This has alerted Rodgers, who is looking to bolster his midfield options next month.

Steven Gerrard’s age and current injury status are believed to be a source of concern for the Northern Irishman, who is aware that the club’s talismanic captain cannot be relied upon forever.

Rakitic is seen as a good long-term alternative, and a player that can slot into the Merseysiders’ playing style with minimal fuss.

The Sevilla star has a £34m release clause, but Rodgers is confident that a significantly lower fee will be enough to lure him away in January.
