Alonso left Anfield in 2009 which coincidentally began the clubs decline in becoming a mid table Premier League outfit.
Rodgers inexplicably signed Joe Allen to fill his defensive midfield position and the former Swansea has unsurprisingly failed to make the role his own, something that has become a common theme in Liverpool’s recent history.
Lucas was hailed as the new central midfield hero in Merseyside but the Brazilian seems to be praised as a better player when he is injured each season leaving the likes of Jordan Henderson and Jonjo Shelvey to make up the numbers in the middle of the park.
Liverpool are set to offer captain Steven Gerrard a new contract to make his partnership with Alonso a long term fix at Anfield.
“Steven has a year left and it’s something he and I are about to discuss,” Rodgers said.
Ryan Giggs will be playing past 40 and Rodgers believes Gerrard won’t be far off that milestone. “I’ve never thought about replacing him because he’s got many years left,” he added.
“You look back at Gordon Strachan and Gary McAllister and guys like that. These players slept and rested in the afternoons, they ate the right things and kept their body weight the same.
“Steven is one of them. He’s a remarkable professional.”
