Liverpool were “ready” to sign Schalke youngster Leroy Sane over the summer, according to the German club’s director, Horst Heldt.
The Reds’ interest in the 19-year-old attacking midfielder has been confirmed over the course of the past few days, with BILD Sport claiming that the Merseysiders launched a move and maintain an interest in the teenager.
Sane has been one of the Gelsenkirchen outfit’s most impressive performers so far this season, with his three goals in his seven Bundesliga outings helping the club to overcome the loss of Julian Draxler.
And Heldt has confirmed that Schalke knocked back serious interest from a host of clubs during the last transfer window, with Liverpool having been ready to make an official move for the teenager:
“There was one or more prestigious club that contacted us about Sane,” he is quoted by Goal. “Liverpool was ready to pay money for him.
“These offers didn’t at all interest us or the player. I am really not concerned about losing the player.
“Two years ago, Ajax made an offer as well.”
Sane featured for Schalke’s first-team on 13 occasions last season and scored against Real Madrid on his Champions League debut.
