Liverpool are closing in on the signing of teenage midfielder Luca Stephenson from Sunderland, according to the Liverpool Echo.
The Merseyside outfit will be hoping to maintain a challenge for the Premier League title this season.
Manager Jurgen Klopp recruited players to add to the first team in a bid to make the squad better equipped to topple Manchester City from the summit.
However, the club are also working behind the scenes to make sure that there is some strong talent coming through the ranks.
According to the Liverpool Echo, the Reds are close to wrapping up a deal for 15-year-old Stephenson, who is likely to cost the club around £200,000 in compensation.
It is believed that the midfielder will go into the Under-18s squad that is led by Barry Lewtas.
At 15 years old it is difficult to be certain whether Stephenson will become a star in the Liverpool team.
However, the youngster is highly rated and has drawn comparisons to the Reds’ current captain Jordan Henderson.
In terms of Liverpool’s development, though, it is important to snap up the country’s top talent.
Over the years, the Merseyside outfit have produced some exciting young talent in the form of Trent Alexander-Arnold, Ben Woodburn and Harry Wilson.
Clinching the signature of Stephenson will boost the club’s academy and could put Liverpool in good stead for the future.
