Despite dominating possession - they had 71% possession during the 90 minutes - Liverpool were only able to draw 1-1 with Napoli at home.

The Reds huffed and puffed, but they were only able to come away with a solitary point thanks to Dejan Lovren's powerful header. Now, they will likely need a draw in the last match of the group against RB Salzburg considering the Italian outfit are expected to beat Genk in their own final game.

In this clash at Anfield, Jurgen Klopp chose to go with Fabinho, Jordan Henderson and James Milner in the middle of the park.

Not the most adventurous of trios. The former had to go off after just 19 minutes, but Georginio Wijnaldum replaced him and, in a Liverpool shirt at least, it is much the same story with the 29-year-old.

Including the Brazil international, they have 68 goals and 106 assists in 755 games between them for the Reds, which is not exactly exhilarating.

That showed against Carlo Ancelotti's team on Wednesday night. Between them, they only managed two key passes, whilst they were also only able to amass four dribbles between them. With just over 30 minutes left on the clock, it looked as though they were running out of ideas.

Klopp then introduced Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain to the fray, though, and his introduction gave Liverpool the extra dimension and impetus they needed.

It is no coincidence that the Merseyside club equalised soon after he came onto the pitch, and the former Arsenal player's performance was another example of his glowing form that has seen him score four goals in his last four starts.

The three dribbles he completed were only bettered by Roberto Firmino, whilst he also won six out of the seven ground duels he contested. Also, the England international, who earns £120k-per-week, per Spotrac, managed one key pass and even made three tackles to boot.

Having started just seven matches this term, he clearly isn't Klopp's first choice, but with each passing display he is putting himself at the forefront of his boss' plans.

Had he been thrown into the action earlier against I Partenopei, the result might have looked different.

It's surely only a matter of time before Oxlade-Chamberlain re-establishes himself as a first-team regular under Klopp.

In other news, Liverpool fans love Virgil van Dijk's galvanising words.
