Sheffield Wednesday full-back and Scotland international Liam Palmer has told the Owls' official website that Andrew Robertson is a "real inspiration".

What did he say?

The 28-year-old earned his fourth cap for his country as the Tartan Army beat Cyprus 2-1 on Sunday in a match that Robertson was unavailable for due to injury.

The 25-year-old Liverpool left-back is arguably Scotland's best player, and Palmer has been talking about how inspiring he is. He said:

"Obviously Andy has been in back-to-back Champions League finals and to say you share a dressing room with someone of that calibre is great — you learn a lot as a full back as well.

"He’s the captain and he leads by example on and off the pitch. It is a real inspiration to be around him — he has that relentless desire to perform at the top level. It’s something that you can draw upon and try and do yourself."

Rapid rise

Although not quite on the same level as Jamie Vardy, Robertson has had to fight his way to the top more than most.

Just two years ago, the former Dundee United full-back was relegated to the Championship with Hull City. He managed just two assists during the 2016/17 season with the Tigers before making the big step up in quality to Anfield for an initial £8m.

It is arguably Jurgen Klopp's best-value signing since he joined the Merseyside outfit in 2015 as manager. Since then, the left-footed maestro has made 96 appearances in all competitions, scoring three goals and providing a stunning 22 assists, whilst he has also appeared in two Champions League finals.

As the Reds lifted the trophy in Madrid last year, it meant that he had gone from being relegated to European champion in the space of just two years.

No wonder he is an inspiration to the likes of Palmer, and rightly so. His transformation from being part of a relegated outfit to one of the best in his position shows that anything is possible for those who have faced adversity at the start of their careers.

Robertson's "relentless desire" has taken him to the very top, and the Reds supporters will be hoping it continues for the foreseeable future.
