One of the games of the season is fast approaching and for Liverpool and Manchester United fans, it really does mean everything to get one over their rivals.

Monday evening's contest at Anfield will be the highest-profile match we've seen so far during the 2016/17 campaign and in terms of league placing, it's a big one.

The Reds sit in fourth in the Premier League table with sixteen points from seven games, whilst the Red Devils go into the game in sixth with thirteen points.

The match could see some serious movement in the league table and Jurgen Klopp will be keen for his new-look Liverpool side bring home the points in front of the Anfield faithful.

So with the match fast-approaching, we want to open the vault and check out Liverpool's best ever strikes against their bitter rivals.

Here's our list of Liverpool's FIVE best goals against Manchester United over the years...

5. Robbie Fowler

Robbie Fowler is a man who will long go down in Liverpool history and ahead of the big game, we thought it was only right to include one of his great strikes scored against the Red Devils.

This one is from the 1995-1996 season in a 2-2 draw at Old Trafford and what a screamer it was, with Fowler lashing home with his left foot.

4. Danny Murphy

Another fantastic strike, this one from Liverpool favourite Danny Murphy.

Whilst this curled free-kick is fantastic, it was also a goal of great significance, giving his side a 1-0 win at Old Trafford - their first win at United for ten years.

3. Neil Ruddock

Whilst this isn't the "best" goal in this list by any means, Neil Ruddock's headed effort gave Liverpool a huge draw against their rivals in this 1994 classic.

Despite going three goals down, Liverpool rallied and this Ruddock goal capped a memorable afternoon that saw the Reds get a crucial point. What a comeback.

2. Steven Gerrard

Steven Gerrard was just 20 years old when he hit this absolute beauty for the Reds back in 2001.

He's had hero status all his career in the Red of Liverpool but goals like this endeared him even more to the crowd.

This is the sort of Stevie G goal we've become so used to seeing over the years and what a strike it was.

1. John Arne Riise

This is easily our favourite screamer in a Liverpool-United game and the winner is John Arne Riise.

Little needs to be said of the Norwegian's talent at free-kicks but this effort is definitely up there as one of the best we saw from Riise throughout his Reds career.

He and Roberto Carlos must go down as the two best left-footed free-kick takers of all time and this strike definitely gives that claim some real muscle.
