Good old Boring James Milner.
When Liverpool’s midfield engine was accredited the unofficial title as one of the dreariest individuals in world football (that we’re aware of, of course), his only crime was that he was, and still is, a model professional.
It’s a bit like the bullies calling smart people at school “nerds” because they’d mastered academia whilst their fellow gangs of playground reprobates were stuck trying to spell their own names correctly.
Milner, to his credit, has since adopted the “boring” caricature and made it his own – frequently taking the opportunity to mock himself and really exaggerate the stereotype, and to be fair to him it’s actually quite funny. Not like the horrendous “Zlatan” masquerade that needs to be nipped in the bud sooner rather than later. Seriously, please stop indulging him people.
The latest instance of Milner’s humour has hit social media, and this time he’s pitched himself as a hopeless competitor in the race for the Ballon d’Or, alongside two genuine candidates.
