Marko Grujic could be the next youngster to breakthrough under Jurgen Klopp but he is well aware that there is a difficult task ahead of him.

What did he say?

The midfielder is currently on loan at Hertha Berlin for the second year running and there is a lot of expectation on him from some sections of the fanbase, with many excited by the promise he has shown and keen to see him given a first-team role.

Some believe he could be a long-term replacement for James Milner, whose contract expires at the end of the year, but the Serbia international is focused on what he needs to do to impress Klopp.

Given the Reds' ambitions in Europe and to win the league, it is fair to say that Grujic has a lot to do to win the German's trust, but he is confident that he will be able to do so if he can add to his game.

Speaking to The Liverpool Echo, he said: "It’s not easy to become a part of the Liverpool squad, I can see myself in the red shirt but I have to become more experienced before I can wear it again.

"I want to improve my physical performance and take my concentration to another level. I want to be ready for Liverpool so I will have a chance to get into the team.

"It is very important for me to play regularly right now and [Klopp] told me to fight for my place in the team."

Big learning curve

As Grujic remarks, game time will be vital to his development, and his regular appearances in the Bundesliga are already yielding positive results, with a WhoScored average rating of 7 in both seasons, as well as seven goals in 29 league games across both campaigns, so far.

That type of form should impress his manager, but a lot more will be required to prove that he is ready for the level of responsibility he will have playing in the Reds' midfield.

His mindset will be crucial and at times more important that what he can show technically.

Liverpool's high press is still an important aspect of their winning formula, as their turnover rate shows, and if he disrupts the cohesion of his teammates then Klopp's side will be less effective in winning the ball back and defending from the front.

The midfield is important in backing up the front-three in that capacity, and a lack of concentration on Grujic's behalf will mean players like Roberto Firmino will waste energy in futile pressing.

There have been concerns in the past that Liverpool's style causes fatigue in the players, and therefore Grujic will need to build up his fitness levels to an appropriate level, as he is of no use if he is unable to sustain his performances across 40-50 matches.

However, he could still get the opportunity to play some role next season and the fact the Anfield outfit have a lot of midfielders to choose from reduces the level of pressure on him to perform.
