Liverpool's defensive frailties have been highlighted many times this season, and there is one man who tends to receive the brunt of the criticism.

Dejan Lovren has struggled for consistency ever since he made the move to Anfield from Southampton in 2014.

On Sunday, the Croatian landed himself in hot water when he gave away a penalty against Everton.

The Reds dominated the Merseyside derby for the majority of the game on home soil, while their opponents offered very little in attack.

Jurgen Klopp's men eventually found the breakthrough in the 42nd minute when Mohamed Salah struck, but the hosts were unable to build on their lead.

With 13 minutes remaining on the clock, Wayne Rooney equalised for Everton from the penalty spot after Lovren sent Dominic Calvert-Lewin to ground with a push.

Klopp took issue with the penalty decision, but former Liverpool striker John Aldridge believes that referee Craig Pawson was right to award the spot-kick.

In his column for the Liverpool Echo, the retired footballer wrote:

“Obviously, the penalty has been the big topic of debate and for me it was a silly mistake by Lovren. It was immature and naive defending. The striker was going away from goal. You don't give the player the opportunity to get the contact and go down. You don't give the referee the opportunity to give a penalty. I think 50 per cent of referees would have given it."
