The Netherlands international was one of the most sought after players in European football, heading into the last transfer window after his 22 goals fired PSV Eindhoven to the Eredivisie title.
Liverpool reportedly held ‘secret talks’ with the now 21-year-old, but eventually he signed for United in a deal worth up to £31m, reuniting with his former international manager, Louis van Gaal.
Although Depay has struggled to transfer the form he showed in his homeland to the Premier League thus far, he’s still a popular figure among Red Devils supporters.
However, things could have been very different for the youngster, who has told Dutch newspaper AD that he was close to joining Liverpool:
“I spoke to Liverpool, they were really concrete – but because of an injury in their team they wanted to wait a bit.”
Depay went on to confirm that PSG and Spurs showed an interest, but that joining United was a simple decision for him:
“After that Paris Saint-Germain came – they were really concrete too.
“One year earlier, Tottenham Hotspur was interested.
“With SEG, my agency, I sat down and considered everything but then Manchester United came.
“Very quick and very direct. At that moment you immediately know; this is it. This is the absolute top. As a club but also the league.”
