Jurgen Klopp has told beIN Sports nobody wanted Andrew Robertson and Joel Matip before they moved to Liverpool.

What did he say?

In 2017, Robertson was purchased for an initial £8m, whilst Joel Matip joined the Reds on a free transfer the summer prior. Now they both look like bargain deals, with the duo playing 109 and 108 times for the Reds respectively.

The big fat Liverpool quiz of 2019 - how much do you remember about the last year at Anfield?

However, the 52-year-old revealed that nobody was after the duo before the Merseyside outfit swooped. He explained: "(Andy) Robertson was sensational attacking but nobody wanted him because defending was not good.

"Now you see him now, you can learn defending. Joel Matip on a free transfer, nobody wanted him really. But you need to make good decisions because the other teams don't sleep."

Fantastic business

At the time, the pair may not have been the most glamorous of signings, but they have since become huge members of Klopp's squad.

Under the former Borussia Dortmund manager's tutelage, Robertson has turned into an attacking sensation despite being a left-back. He picked up 13 assists in all competitions for the Reds last term - only right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold had more with 16 - whilst he has also managed six so far this campaign. Such has been the quality of his displays, he was recently named as the best on the planet in his position by ESPN, and is now valued at a huge £72m by Transfermarkt.

Matip, too, has proven his worth. Unfortunately, the Cameroon international has struggled with injuries, but he has still managed to make 108 appearances for the club in all competitions, whilst he has also picked up a Champions League medal as well.

It just goes to show that even in this day and age, true value can be found in the transfer market, and it is astonishing that no other team saw something in Matip and Robertson like Klopp did. Surely the scouting standards cannot be that much different amongst the top clubs in the Premier League? Either way, this is another example of a win for Liverpool and their boss.
